Facts about the Levy

How is the library funded?

The Marysville Public Library receives funding from the State of Ohio through the Public Library Fund (PLF). Although once a stable source of library revenue, the PLF has been reduced and/or frozen several times in the last 10 years. Despite an increase in use by residents, our library is currently funded by the PLF at 1997 levels. Support from the PLF accounts for approximately 46 percent of the library's annual revenue. In 2004, due in part to the decline in state funding, Marysville Public Library passed a 5 year 1 mil operating levy. This levy was replaced in 2008 and is expiring at the end of this year. Funding from this levy currently accounts for 54 percent of the library's annual revenue.

What is the levy?

The 5-year, 1.5 Mil operating levy request is a REPLACEMENT of the current 1 Mil levy that expires December 31, 2013.  The Library only has one levy.

When is the issue on the ballot and who can vote?

The levy issue will be on the November 5, 2013 ballot.  Voters in the Marysville School District, which has the same service area boundaries as the Marysville Public Library, can vote on the issue.

How will the funds be used?

Passing the levy will allow the library to maintain current level of programs and services, restore Sunday hours, and keep up with growing demand for materials, including digital content and ebooks. These funds will not be used for any new facilities.

How much will it cost?

For the owner of a home appraised at $100,000, it will cost approximately $52.50 per year or $4.38 a month. This levy will cost $1.86 more per month than the expiring levy for a house appraised at $100,000.  To view your own property values please refer to the Union County Auditor's Website.   Search for your property and then select the "Tax Estimator" in the left column.

What will happen if the replacement levy does not pass?

The library will lose approximately 54.4% of its funding at the end of 2014.  The Library will work with the community to determine what actions to take to best serve our residents.

What do you mean by growing demand for materials and services?

In 2000, the library had aproximatly 7,800 patrons.  Today the library has more than 27,000 active users.  Additionally, circulation (materials checked out by patrons) has more than doubled in the past 10 years.  We currently check out more than 600,000 items to patrons each year.  Here are some charts that show the growth.
